Enermax Modu87 Plus 600 Watt PSU review

By: Hilbert Hagedoorn Edited by Ian R Barling | Published: February 11, 2010

So today we are peeking at the Enermax Modu87+ series power supply. Enermax is actually releasing two series, the PRO87+ is the native cable series, while the MODU87+ is modular with detachable cables. We are testing the 600W modular version, these PSUs however will be released in 500, 600, 700 and 800W versions.

Let's first show some features courtesy of Enermax:

  • 87PLUS ready - Extreme efficiency PSU series with 87-92% efficiency @ 20-100% load. Certified to meet 80 PLUS GOLD requirements.
  • SpeedGuard - The world’s leading patented fan control starting with unmatched 330RPM to a maximum of 1000RPM for optimal cooling and minimum noise.
  • Dynamic Hybrid Transformer Topology - Technological breakthrough topology using a staged dynamic transformer array for extremely high efficiency with the most durable and stable output at any load.
  • Hybrid Capacitor Array - High-performance capacitor array of heavy-duty solid state capacitors & Japanese electrolytic capacitors to ensure tightest DC stability and regulation.
  • C6 & Hybrid ready - Maximum compatibility with C6 & hybrid states of current and future CPU & GPU generations by ZERO LOAD Design (no minimum load).
  • Twister fan inside - 13.9cm Twister-bearing fan with low noise and long lifetime. (100,000 hours MTBF, Patented)
  • Future ready - 12P modular design for possibly upcoming new CPU and GPU 10P and/or 12P connectors.
  • DXXI ready - 100% 6+2P (8P) PCI-E connector to support new generation DXXI graphic cards.
  • 24/7 @ 50°C ready - Non-Stop industrial class performance at 50°C ambient.
  • GAMING ready - ATX12V v2.3 support for latest Intel Core 2 Duo/Quad/Extreme/i7/i5, and AMD Athlon 64X2 & Phenom II and SLI or CrossFireX.
  • World ready - 100-240VAC in with automatic adjustment and active PFC for global usage.
  • HeatGuard - Keeping PSU fan running for 30-60 seconds after shutdown to dissipate the remaining system heat and prolonging system lifetime.
  • SafeGuard - Industry-leading octuple protection circuitry of OCP, OVP, AC UVP, DC UVP, OPP, OTP, SCP & SIP.
  • CordGuard - Fixing the AC cord tightly to avoid accidental shutdowns of your PC.

With 600 Watts the PSU falls into the high-end category. Although not exactly Kilowatt material, it most certainly is capable enough of running a dedicated high-end PC. Especially when you realize that Enermax always makes sure your power supply can have a higher peak wattage, this 600 Watt model for example can take 600 Watts on just the three 12v rails, then 120 Watts on the 3.3 / +5V rails, and a little more on the -12V and +5Vcb headers tallying everything up towards a combined DC output of 741 Watts. Peak power however is set at 660W, according to Enermax. Enermax products never fail to disappoint in that aspect.

If memory serves me right it's not certified, but obviously can easily take any SLI/Crossfire ready gear. You'll receive no less than four 6/8-pin (DXX) headers for graphics cards and that is more than sufficient for any 2-way multi-GPU setup, especially with 25 Amps available on each 12v rail.

But let's go to the next page and talk about efficiency for a bit...
