 Enermax Revolution 85+ 850W review

By: Hilbert Hagedoorn Edited by Ant | Published: November 2, 2009

Alright so let's talk a little bit about what this PSU ahs to offer. Enermax is known and reputed by their higher-class power supplies. Especially the more high-end series -- kick total ass. This translates itself into the most stable and ripple free power supplies. This is the marketing induced feature set as provided by Enremax:

  • 85PLUS ready!
    World's first PSU series with 85-91% efficiency @ 20-100% load. Certified by 80 PLUS® organization (850/950/ 1050W).
  • FUTURE CPU ready!
Ready for most upcoming CPU generations by 12P sockets for possible connector changes, by complying to latest EPS12V PSU design guides for compatibility & by ZERO LOAD Design for C6 state functions.
  • FUTURE GPU ready!
Ready for most upcoming CPU generations by 12P sockets for possible connector changes,by six massive 12V rails for perfect load distribution & by ZERO LOAD Design for Hybrid Mode functions.
  • 24/7 @ 50°C ready!
Non-Stop industrial class performance at 50°C/122°F ambient.
  • 99% 12V Power
    World's first EPS12V PSU with 99% 12V output capability.
  • SERVER ready!
SSI PSDG 2009 support for latest Intel™ Core Extreme/i7, Xeon™ and AMD® Opteron™ and SLI™ or CrossFireX™ and AMD GAME! or AMD GAME! Ultra systems and downward compatible with SSI PSDG 2008 1.0, EPS12V 2.92, 2.91, 2.8.
  • EMC ready!
Full-scale electromagnetic filtering protects your system against radiation interferences (CE EMC EN61204 compliance).
  • HeatGuard
Keeping PSU fan running for 30-60 seconds after shut down to dissipate the remaining system heat and prolong system lifetime.
  • PowerGuard
PSU status monitor with 4-mode LED (Off / Stand-by / OK / Fail).
  • SafeGuard
Industry-leading protection circuitry (OCP, OVP, AC UVP, DC UVP, OPP, OTP, SIP)

Yes that's absolutely stuffed full with features. This PSU is released in 850W, 950W, 1,050W, and 1,250W models, Enermax wanted us show you what they have to offer. And sure, as such it is only fair that we took a look at of the finest PSUs but - we check out the 850W model - targeted at the enthusiast PC builder out there with a demand for heavy graphic cards.

I say this as the PSU will come with six .. that's right six  separate 12V rails each allowing a 30 AMP peak (though combined 70A) and that's a lot. Do some simple math with me here, 70A x 12V = 840 Watt available on the 12V lines for all the graphics havoc you like to create. Then another 160W is available on the +3.3 and +5V rails and a little extra on the 5V Vsb and -12V rail totalling everything up at 1032 Watt.

850W

Now you are going 'huh more than a 1000 watt ?' right now. Yes, that's Enermax, the PSU is classified at 850 Watt, but really can easily handle much more, even over a kilowatt. And that's value right there in your pocket.

The PSU is labelled with a Silver class power energy efficiency, what that tells us is that the PSU efficiency is exceptional for a PSU the 850 Watt range -- ranging from 85% to 91% over a wide range of load utilization.

The unit is kept cool by a 13.5cm fan spinning at a maximum of 1,500 rpm at full load. However we feel even with the PSU stressed that 1500 RPM is never reached, so 1000 RPM on average seems a more plausible number making it a very silent product.
