SteelSeries WoW MMO Gaming Mouse
By Hilbert Hagedoorn, October 11, 2008 - 8:04 PM

Well, for the freaks I'd say. A mouse designed for a specific game, how many copies and subscriptions did they sell for WOW again ?

If you’re a fan of MMOs, especially World of Warcraft, how can you live without the SteelSeries official WoW MMO Gaming Mouse? Okay, so you could probably live without it, but this thing is legit and was created along with Ideazon in collaboration with Blizzard. This mouse has a ton of features including 15 programmable buttons. There is also an in-game configuration utility that lets you assign whatever functions you would like to each of the buttons. You can also save profiles for different gaming experiences.

You can even choose from 16 million colors for the LEDs on the back that make the mouse look so cool. No macros or control scheme, however. So, you’re going to have to take the time to line up just what functions you need on the buttons. You can pick up this gaming mouse on November 13th, just in time for the Wrath of the Lich King release.

Crucial Ballistix Tracer PC3-10600 (DDR3-1333MHz)
By Hilbert Hagedoorn, October 11, 2008 - 7:55 PM

I think I still have the DDR(1) version in a system somewhere, and admittedly, the LEDs look so cool. Lexar announced immediate availability of Crucial Ballistix Tracer PC3-10600 (DDR3-1333MHz) high-performance, low-latency memory modules. These modules are the world's first high-performance DDR3 memory modules to incorporate activity-indicating Light-Emitting Diodes (LED). The LEDs on the new Crucial Ballistix Tracer DDR3 modules are illuminated in a random pattern based on memory activity, highlighting the system memory and allowing users to visually see how intensely the memory is working. Additionally, eight blue ground-effects LEDs emit a constant glow near the motherboard memory sockets. Crucial Ballistix Tracer DDR3 memory modules are available in 1GB and 2GB modules, or 2GB and 4GB kits.

Latest NVidia GPUs used to crack WiFi
By zinjin, October 11, 2008 - 2:55 PM

When NVIDIA claimed that CUDA on combo with a fast GPU is very powerfull to use for computing, I'm pretty sure they didn't have this in mind. An interesting article over at SC Magazine. Seems a Russian firm is using the latest NVidia GPU's to increase WiFi password recovery by 10000%. Amazing in how powerful GPU's have become in the last few years eh ?

Global Secure Systems has said that a Russian's firm's use of the latest NVidia graphics cards to accelerate WiFi ‘password recovery' times by up to an astonishing 10,000 per cent proves that WiFi's WPA and WPA2 encryption systems are no longer enough to protect wireless data.

David Hobson, managing director of GSS, claimed that companies can no longer view standards-based WiFi transmission as sufficiently secure against eavesdropping to be used with impunity. He also said that the use of VPNs is arguably now mandatory for companies wanting to comply with the Data Protection Act.

He said: “This breakthrough in brute force decryption of WiFi signals by Elcomsoft confirms our observations that firms can no longer rely on standards-based security to protect their data. As a result, we now advise clients using WiFi in their offices to move on up to a VPN encryption system as well.

“Brute force decryption of the WPA and WPA2 systems using parallel processing has been on the theoretical possibilities horizon for some time - and presumably employed by relevant government agencies in extreme situations - but the use of the latest NVidia cards to speedup decryption on a standard PC is extremely worrying.

“The $64,000 question, of course, is what happens when hackers secure a pecuniary advantage by gaining access to company data flowing across a WPA or WPA2-encrypted wireless connection. Will the Information Commissioner take action against the company concerned for an effective breach of the Data Protection Act.

Thanks Zinjin for reporting his news.

NVIDIA GeForce 270, 290 and GX2 in november
By Hilbert Hagedoorn, October 10, 2008 - 7:33 PM

Guru3D.com ImageOK -- Inquirerers words , not mine, but NVIDIA is to release a couple of new products next month. I weeded out the slanter though, the Inq almost makes you believe that upgraded GPUs are a bad thing, sheesh:

There is a 270 coming, it will have a big brother called the 290, and a dual card code named "China Syndrome".

They popped up on a PNY price list a few weeks ago, and then were pulled off immediately. This part is what we were calling the GT200b in May, but the public code name is GT206. It is simply an optically shrunk GT200, so clock for clock, you won't get any speed boost out of it. It is meant to fatten up the margins by reducing cost. If the GT200 is a 576mm^2 die, and the 206 is around 460mm^2 (~21mm*21mm die), even with the more expensive 55nm process. So what are the 270 and 290? That is easy, they are 55nm GT200s, aka GT200b, aka GT206. The 270 and 290 are simply a little faster 260s and 280s.

The GX2 then. We haven't seen a code name for it officially, but NV AIBs are talking about it. Take a 55nm GT200b/206 and put two PCBs together a la the 9800GX2.

I say bring them on ...

9800GT/GTX,9500GT to lower power consumption by BIOS update
By Hilbert Hagedoorn, October 10, 2008 - 7:20 PM

Rumor is that NVIDIA has been trying to make the 9800 GT/GTX, 9500 GT greener. According to some partners of the company, there are BIOS updates incoming for several GeForce 9 series graphic cards. With the BIOS updated, 9800GT, 9800GTX and 9500GT will have a lower power consumption when idle.

If you have tried 9500GT, you may notice the card has a 2D/3D clock, when idle the core clock can be as low as 216MHz. But the memory frequency and shader keeps unchanged. Maybe this time NV can fix this small problem [Via Expreview].

NeuroSky and Square Enix show off brainwave-controlled game concept
By Hilbert Hagedoorn, October 10, 2008 - 7:17 PM

I'm so thinking OCZ's NIA here. NeuroSky partnered with Square Enix to develop a brainwave-controlled game concept:

NeuroSky, Inc., the leading manufacturer of “wearable” consumer bio-sensors, announced today the unveiling of a brainwave-controlled video game at the Tokyo Game Show 2008 in Makuhari, Japan, on October 9 and 10. This exciting and entertaining demonstration is based on a new game concept being jointly developed with Square Enix Co., Ltd. (Square Enix).

The technical demonstration developed with Square Enix operates in conjunction with Windows PC machines and features the NeuroSky commercial headset, MindSet™. The recently introduced MindSet is capable of interfacing to a variety of gaming platforms, including PC, console and mobile. It resembles a pair of headphones, with a single electrode contacting the user’s forehead while reading the player’s brainwave information, or EEG data. The headset registers the current state of relaxation or concentration of players, allowing them to perform a variety of actions within the game.

“At Square Enix, we are actively involved in developing a variety of gaming interfaces. I am thrilled to have this opportunity to work with NeuroSky, and apply their advanced sensor technology in this brain-wave controlled game demonstration,” commented Ryutaro Ichimura, Producer at Square Enix. “Although the main purpose of the demo is to test the results of our short development period, I hope it also unlocks new potentials in gaming.”

Stanley Yang, the CEO of NeuroSky, considers the joint development with Square Enix as further validation that brainwave-reading (EEG) technology is rapidly emerging onto the video game scene. “We are delighted to have built such an important partnership with a key industry player to have jointly developed a demonstration based on brainwave-reading technology. The market has been anticipating the introduction of this technology for many years, and the reality of controlling features of a video game through mental control is finally taking root.”

Sony SLDR A900 has the highest in-camera write speed
By Hilbert Hagedoorn, October 10, 2008 - 7:14 PM

With the variety of flash-based media cards in the market, how could you tell which works the best on your high speed Digital camera? Does the lightening fast Sandisk Ducati or Extreme IV series CompactFlash warrant the premium price for your DSLR? Rob Galbraith has the answer for you; they’ve been testing in camera writing speed in both Jpeg and Raw format on numbers of popular Digital SLR for ages. Their latest updates are Nikon D90, Canon EOS 50D and Sony A900; and the latter tops 35MB/S write speed with Sandisk Ducati CompactFlash.

Thanks to the support of latest and fastest UDMA, we’ve seen a significant improvement in-camera write speed. Take the newly announced Canon 50D for example, it supports UDMA up to Mode 6 and is capable of writing at the rate of 33.72MB/S to an 8GB Sandisk Extreme Ducati (RG database). That’s 3 times faster compare to its pre-successor 40D with the same CompactFlash. The improvement of in-camera write speed also free up the memory buffer, so you don’t miss a shot while shooting in continue mode.

Always refer to RG’s CF/SD performance database before you make the purchase; not all flash cards are created equal despite having the same rating, and not all DSLR works in harmony with the best card out there.

Google GeoEye-1 Satellite started snapping photos
By Hilbert Hagedoorn, October 9, 2008 - 7:58 PM

We’ve known that the GeoEye-1 from Google, a satellite that’s controlled by the military would be launching soon. And now the camera on the device, which sports the highest resolution of any terrestrial camera, is now in orbit.

The camera started taking pictures yesterday and as you can see, the images are crystal clear. And while many are concerned about it’s spy qualities, the images that will be placed on the web will not be zoomed in close enough to really qualify as “spying.”

Even so, this same satellite is capable of zooming in to a resolution of 41 centimeters, which to put it in Wired’s terms, “close enough to zoom in on the home plate of a baseball diamond.” Scary! Photos this zoomed in are sent to the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, who are putting $502 million into the project.

NetGear unveils dual-band firewall with VPN security
By Hilbert Hagedoorn, October 9, 2008 - 7:54 PM

NetGear this week released its SXRN3205 ProSafe Wireless-N Virtual Private Network (VPN) firewall, which the company claims is the first to combine dual band 5.0/2.4GHz Wireless-N with SSL and IPsec VPN.

The company has integrated its Dual WAN Gigabit SSL VPN firewall with a dual-band Wireless-N access point, which is also backwards compatible with 802.11g on the 2.4GHz band. The platform supports up to five Secure Socket Layer tunnels and five IP Security tunnels simultaneously, offering secure remote connections for 25 user applications. The SSL tunnels allow remote access to data without needing to install a software client, and offer automatic cache cleanup after a session has ended.

IPsec tunnels connect site-to-site offices and offer legacy, client-based remote access. The Firewall features denial-of-service (DoS) attack protection, stateful packet inspection (SPI), URL keyword filtering, SYSLOG support, and e-mail reporting.

Dual band support will keep offices connected through equipment transition from the older 802.11g/b standard to Wireless-N, which is claimed to offer up to fifteen times the speed and ten times the coverage area. The SXRN3205 ProSafe Wireless-N firewall is available now for a suggested price of $485.

Razer Lycosa Mirror and Arctosa keyboard
By Hilbert Hagedoorn, October 9, 2008 - 7:52 PM

Razer unveiled new gaming keyboards today; the Lycosa Mirror Special Edition and the Arctosa. Both keyboards are based on the design of the original Razer Lycosa, but with subtle design differences.

For instance, the $79.99 Lycosa Mirror trades the non-slip rubber finish keytops from the Lycosa for high-gloss mirror finish keytops while the Arctosa is a low-budget version which lacks the non-slip keys, blue LED keys, the lighting options and the USB and audio port hub. Though, at $49.99 it's still kinda expensive for a keyboard.
The Razer Lycosa Mirror Edition is influenced by gamer feedback on the original Razer Lycosa where some gamers eschewed the rubber keytop for enhanced backlighting with clean lines. Razer’s reply to that culminated in the Razer Lycosa Mirror Edition. A gaming keyboard like its predecessor, the Razer Lycosa, the differences between them are a high-gloss mirror finish on the former with enhanced backlighting for night gaming. The original award winning Razer Lycosa will still be sold at all major electronics retailers while the Razer Lycosa Mirror Edition will be available in December 2008.

The Razer Arctosa is designed to cater to the minimalist gamer looking for the bare essentials in a gaming keyboard. The Razer Arctosa is a basic version of the Razer Lycosa without the backlight but enhanced with fully macro-programmable and media access keys. The Razer Arctosa comes available in the standard silver-printed key letters but also comes with a black on black edition for gamers who have achieved the art of gaming without looking at their keys. The Razer Arctosa silver on black edition and the Razer Arctosa black on black edition will retail in November 2008 at global stores and online.

“The high-gloss mirror finish of the Razer Lycosa Mirror Special Edition will appeal to the stylistic crowd, while being powered by the exact technology which has catapulted the Razer Lycosa into one of Razer’s core-selling products,” said Robert “Razerguy” Krakoff, president of Razer. He continued “The Razer Arctosa’s black on black version is a tribute to style personified. It’s a basic gaming keyboard which also looks awesome with any gaming rig.”
